SCOPE

As result of the decade long civil crisis in Liberia, most Liberian Mandingoes traveled around the world and lost touch of their own history, thereby leaving the young and future generation with limited knowledge of their culture and history of Liberia. It is against this background that FELMAUSA sees the need to launch an educative and informative column entitled:

“Mandingo History – Test your IQ”

The column will help:

·         Educate Liberian Mandingoes about their history

·         Uphold our value system, and

·         Enlighten others about our successes and struggles in Liberia

On a weekly basis, this column will solicit answers to posted questions relative to different topics about Liberian Mandingo history. The correct answers and the photo (optional) of the winner will be published on the website.

We ask all contestants to send in their answers along with a photo or a specific address or contact information for identification purposes to the email address below:

Question: Who was the first Liberian Mandingo to become a senator in the Liberian legislature? When? Which county did he/she represent?

Answer: Honorable Manyou Kamara Sr. was the first Liberian Mandingo to become a Senator in the Liberian Legislature. In fact, he was not only a Senator, but a Senior Senator of Bong County. He won on the ticket of the then opposition party but now ruling, the Unity Party headed by Dr. Edward Beyan Kesselly as standard-bearer who himself was a Mandingo. That was during the Doe's administration, under the auspices of Helmet Hammer as Chairman of the Election Commission of those special elections held in 1985.
